Redistricting North Brooklyn

By our count, there are at least 4 proposals for redistricting New York’s congressional districts to account for the 2010 Census (in which NYS lost population relative to other states, and therefore loses two congressional seats). Three of the proposals – those by the Democratically-controlled State Assembly, the Republican-controlled State Senate and the independent group Common Cause – leave Greenpoint and the Northside untouched. The fourth, and right now, perhaps, the odds-on favorite, shifts these neighborhoods out of Nydia Velázquez’s district and into Carolyn Maloney’s district (which currently covers Manhattan’s Upper East Side and parts of Hunters Point and Long Island City in Queens.

The Center for Urban Research has some great maps that let you compare the various congressional redistricting proposals, as well as the proposed new boundaries for State senate and assembly districts.
