A plan to build luxury condos on the toxin-laden site of a former plastics factory in Greenpoint could kick up pollutants and poison kids attending a planned school nearby, neighbors fear.
As we learned at our community event earlier this month, the level of toxicity at the Harte site is frightening. That does not mean that it can’t be cleaned up. We are encouraged that the new owner wants to move forward with the project and take care of the clean up quickly. At the same time, the clean up has to be done thoroughly and properly and in a manner that want cause further harm to local residents. A clean up plan that just addresses the contaminated soil under the site is not acceptable – the phthalate toxins from this factory have spread out towards people’s homes, a public park and the site of a proposed public school.
