Volunteer to set up our pop-up parks and get some sod for a luscious lawn of your own!!
Bedford Ave is peppered with grassy lawns during Williamsburg Walks, giving all of us a little green space to relax on while enjoying the buzz of our main drag.
At the end of each of the Walks — June 8, June 15 & June 22– NAG gives away the sod from our pop-up parks to volunteers. That’s right, volunteer for a couple hours and you can create a little lawn magic in your own green space.
How it works: If you come and volunteer from 12 – 3pm, helping us unroll the sod and set up our green spaces all along Bedford Avenue, then you get first dibs at grabbing some sod. For just 3 hours of labor, you can take as much sod as you can “carry” away at 8pm. It is slightly dirty work, involving a little heavy lifting. Each roll of sod weighs about 25 lbs — nothing too big but it is definitely a workout!! Email Ryan Kuonen, over at firstname.lastname@example.org, to sign up.
Each week of the event, as the programming finishes at 8pm, volunteers can arrive and claim their sod. Whatever is not taken by volunteers will be free to the public starting at 9pm, first come-first served. We have a lot of grass– 6 pallets worth each week– and we don’t want any of it to go to waste, so please spread the word to your neighbors, local parks friends groups, and community gardens.
We love to see the magic we create for a few hours on the street turn into a neighborhood green space. With some love and attention, you can turn some free sod patches into a great urban oasis!
