TONIGHT: Bushwick Inlet Park Meeting
October 21, 2014 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Where’s our park? In 2005, the City promised to build a new 28-acre at Bushwick Inlet to serve both the Williamsburg and Greenpoint communities. This new park was promised in order to help Williamsburg’s and Greenpoint’s parks and open space to keep pace with the growing population that would come with the 190-block waterfront rezoning. In the decade since the rezoning passed, we have seen thousands of new housing units constructed, and thousands upon thousands of new residents.
But those 28 acres? To date, let 7 acres of Bushwick Inlet Park has been constructed (that would be the waterfront block between North 9th and North 10th Streets, where the soccer field and community building were constructed). About a third of the property has not even been acquired from the private owners who control it (and the City has no actionable plan for acquisition). The remaining acreage is in the process of acquisition (expected to be completed by 2015), after which the City will need to undertake significant environmental remediation before construction on an actual park can begin.
What can be done? Tonight, Friends of Bushwick Inlet Park is holding a community meeting to discuss exactly that. Come out and see how you can help.
